Good Eggs’ sourcing standards are unrivaled, with local, organic, and pasture-raised food. Local producers imply less travel time from the farm to your home, so you can be confident that your food isn’t laden with unnecessary preservatives to extend shelf life. Therefore, Good Eggs has curated their store with trustworthy brands, whole food products, and healthy components. This helps to eliminate any of the guesswork you may confront when deciding if a product is healthy or unhealthy.

Fortunately, having your groceries delivered by Good Eggs does not come with the baggage of a subscription. The method is intended to be as similar to physically going to a supermarket as possible except for, of course, the traveling and overpriced organic foods. You have the ability to order exactly what you want, when you want it. 

There is no cost to open a Good Eggs account, and there is no requirement to begin a subscription for any of their items. How to get groceries delivered from Good Eggs

You can order groceries and products from the Good Eggs website or app with iOS/Android. First, you’ll browse the online marketplace, adding products to your basket as you go. On the website, there are numerous options to sort through. All of the products are neatly grouped into various categories, and the interface is simple to navigate (much easier than grocery aisles, IMO).

When your basket is ready, you will select a delivery time at the checkout. Good Eggs delivers seven days a week and has flexible delivery windows. The delivery times vary by zip code, ranging from 6 AM to 10 PM. If you are not at home, Good Eggs can still bring your order to you.

As aforementioned, Good Eggs does not offer a subscription service, so you don’t have to worry about receiving unwanted recurring shipments.

Forgot something? Don’t worry! You have until the delivery time cutoff to adjust the delivery time, address, and goods in your order (cutoffs are visible under your Order Details). Furthermore, if you have shopping reminders enabled, they will send you some friendly emails before your order cutoff time to remind you to add any last-minute products to your basket. With their emphasis on fresh food, they continually add things to the marketplace as they arrive, making it ideal to check the night before your order to see what delightful goodies have just arrived.

All orders are packed in Good Eggs‘ trademark reusable and compostable boxes, complete with ice packs. They’ll even come and pick up your Good Eggs boxes, ice packs, and recyclable or compostable packaging. There are also newsletters in the box that list all of the items, as well as a story about the week’s produce collection and a few featured recipes to explore.

Good Eggs’ standards

Good Eggs is rooted in the idea of supporting families, communities, and the environment with sky-high food standards. From visiting farms and testing their products firsthand to enforcing strict ethical standards, this grocery delivery company undeniably has some of the highest standards in the biz. 

Based in the Bay Area, Good Eggs carries mostly local goods (local meaning that most of their the goods are produced within 150 miles, with 80% within 250 miles). For reference, Whole Foods, which is widely seen as the holy grail of healthy, sustainable food, only carries about 20% local goods. 

When the goods – especially produce – are local, it means that they’re fresher, too. Less time is spent delivering local goods from the farm to your door – claiming 48 hours from harvest to shipping – so you can count on fresher, more delicious fruit and vegetables. Plus, Good Eggs customers can feel good knowing that they’re supporting the local economy. 

For the goods that aren’t available within 250 miles, Good Eggs picks imported goods carefully, according to their standards for flavor, quality, and ethics. 

Good Eggs has an entire list of produce sourcing criteria, citing that growers that they work with directly must be fully transparent, open to site visits, and have filled out a detailed Labor Practice Standards questionnaire. They also have an entire list of banned substances and processes that they check for with all of their products. In addition, when applicable, all growers and suppliers that they work with must demonstrate compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act.

Supply chain transparency

When you pick up a product in the grocery store, it can be hard or even impossible to know exactly where it came from. But, that doesn’t mean you have to grow your own produce to ensure that you’re supporting an ethical supply chain.

Good Eggs boasts 100% supply chain transparency. They speak directly with their producers, visit farms, and only work with them if they provide 100% transparency across their own supply chain. Good Eggs examines the ingredient list of each product and nixes anything with untrustworthy additives or chemicals.

The manager of Good Eggs’ meat program used to be a vegetarian, so, as you can imagine, the company has strict standards for meat quality. This means that the animals from Good Eggs’ producers get real outdoor access, are taken care of, and are never factory farmed.

All Good Eggs orders are packed in recyclable boxes. The company uses BPA-free bubble wrap and cold sleeves that can be fully recycled in San Francisco, and they can can also return the company’s BPA-free plastic deli containers, which are used for many Good Eggs Kitchen products. If you live outside of SF, you’ll need to check out your area’s plastics recycling policies. 

You can also arrange for Good Eggs to pick up the boxes, ice packs, glass bottles, and jars to ensure that they’re properly recycled or reused, if you’re unsure of your area’s standards. For glass bottles and jars, you’ll get the deposit credit back to your account when you return them to Good Eggs. 

Does Good Eggs have meal kits?

Good Eggs also offers 100+ seasonal meal kits without requiring a subscription. These meal kits include pre-marinated meats or salads that are ready to assemble, and they are all available for same-day delivery. Because the ingredients and sauces are fully prepared in the Good Eggs Kitchen, they usually take less than 15 minutes of active cooking time, allowing you to spend less time planning and prepping.

All of the ingredients at Good Eggs are properly stored in order for you to enjoy fresh dishes. Obviously, they don’t have to put produce on display, where it will dry out and decay faster, not to mention other buyers picking over and touching it. Instead, they keep food at the right temperature and humidity at their fulfillment center for a limited time, just for you.

How much does Good Eggs cost?

Good Eggs’ super high food standards mean that you won’t find any cheap, store-brand options with this grocery delivery service. While we seriously respect the company’s commitment to fresh, ethical food, we know that not everyone has the budget for it. To get those more affordable store-brand options (which might require sacrificing some of the food standards) you might want to check out Safeway grocery delivery or Misfits Market, which offers prices up to 40% off grocery store prices.    

Meal kits from Good Eggs cost around $7.50 to $12 per portion, depending on the kit that you choose. This is on par with the popular meal kit services around today. For reference, Hello Fresh meals range from about $8 to $11 per portion, while Blue Apron costs about $7.50 to $10 per portion. 

As we’ve noted, unlike many other meal kit platforms, Good Eggs doesn’t require you to have a subscription. So, if you don’t want to commit to weekly meal kits, (like you would have to with Hello Fresh and other competitors), Good Eggs is a solid option. But, if you are ready to settle down with meal kits from Good Eggs, you can subscribe to the company’s Weeknight Dinner Kit and save $5. 

Good Eggs enforces a $30 minimum for all orders. So, while you wouldn’t place an order for one-off items, you can easily meet the minimum with a week or couple day’s worth of grub.  

Does Good Eggs charge a delivery fee?

Good Eggs offers delivery options ranging from completely free to $13.99. For San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles customers, the fee is based on the order subtotal (before discounts and promotions), as well as the chosen day and delivery window.

$2 is added to any of these fees if the order is placed in the early morning window (6-8 am Monday through Friday or 8-10 am on Saturday or Sunday). 

This is a pretty complex delivery fee structure, to say the least. To save money on Good Eggs, we’d recommend being strategic about the delivery window you choose and placing fewer large orders instead of several small orders. 

Do I need to tip my Good Eggs delivery man?

Good Eggs states that there’s no need to tip their delivery staff. Don’t worry – that’s not because they don’t care about their workers! It’s because Good Eggs takes a Good Jobs fee of 7.5% of the subtotal before discounts and promotions. The fee is capped at $14.99 for large orders. Rest assured, all of that fee goes straight to labor costs and programs. 

Where is Good Eggs available?

We’ve touched on it throughout, but we’ve come to the one key drawback of ordering groceries through Good Eggs: limited locations. Good Eggs is only available for customers located in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. If you don’t live in these areas of the West Coast, you  unfortunately won’t be able to order groceries on this platform. 

So, while we salute Good Eggs for its top-notch products, enormous selection, and stellar food standards, we know that it’s simply not an option for the majority of us, as much as we’d love for it to be. One pro of this, though? Being only available in California gives Good Eggs the ability to deliver alcohol beyond just wine and beer, unlike other services that have to adhere to other states’ alcohol sales laws.
