South African jazz musician and trumpeter, Hugh Masekela, was at Jazz at Lincoln Center for a 75th birthday celebration. The season I subscribe to is called Visionary Voices, an appropriate title when presenting musicians such as Masekela who has had both cultural and musical impact on South Africa and, for much of his life, the United States. The musicians in his band – very talented, particularly the young guitar player.
This was a very enjoyable evening. If you like the sound of a big band but want to hear it in the context of original compositions, the Maria Schneider Orchestra is worth checking out.
Be sure to visit her YouTube channel for performances of the Maria Schneider Orchestra and her latest Grammy-winning recording, Winter Morning walks, a collaboration with soprano, Dawn Upshaw, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
